HALF AN HOUR LATER WE WERE WALKING the three blocks through downtown Blood Moon to the pecan-lined street in the historic district where Dallas and Lacey lived. A chorus of cicadas hummed as we passed the pink granite courthouse. The scent of freshly mowed grass made my wolf want to vault the nearest white picket fence to nip at the fireflies that were dancing in the early evening air. A green plastic sprinkler had been set up in one yard, whirring lazily as it swished over the grass and left puddles on the hot cement sidewalk.

Topher tugged at my fingers before I could step into the spray, angling his head down to press a kiss to the nape of my neck where a recent bite tingled faintly at the edge of my collar. I shivered, feeling the brush of his lips everywhere, from the water sprinkling over my flip flops, to the lazy night breeze that smelled of sunscreen and ice cream trucks and first kisses, to every inch of my skin he’d spent the last half hour devouring upstairs before we hurriedly threw our clothes back on and raced out the door.

“If you keep doing that, we’re going to be late.”

“Are we now.” Another kiss. In cut-offs and a worn white t-shirt that fit snug across his chest, he looked relaxed and happy. For one stolen second, I allowed myself to picture a future filled with days like this, one where we weren’t at war. Where my dad and his brother weren’t missing. Where we could just be us.

My phone buzzed. I checked the screen.

Sofia: Twenty-six years ago, on the night of a blood moon…

West: Now if that isn’t the start of a good horror story…

Shifter births often increased near the full moon. It was just in our blood. River had been born under a full moon, too, and part of me had always wondered if that was why our wolves could so easily hold magic.

West: Did you see the highlights from the scavenger hunt?

Sofia: Dallas texted me. I’m so glad you and your brothers are all together today.

West: I wish you could be here, Mom.

She sent a moon emoji.

Sofia: How’s Topher?

My heart gave a nervous flip. I glanced up, but he was scrolling through his phone, giving me space.

West: We should… talk. Soon.

Sofia: Love you, mijo.

West: Love you.

Dallas and Lacey’s house sat on a lush green lawn with two sprawling live oaks out front. The wide wrap-around porch had been newly restored and painted a crisp white. Fat baskets of peppermint-striped petunias hung suspended from brass hooks, swaying gently in the muggy summer breeze.

Seeing the note taped to the door, I turned the knob and slid into a welcome blast of air-conditioning. The sound of barking and laughter floated through the spacious entryway with its grand walnut staircase. Catching Topher’s hand, I tugged him after me.

“There’s the birthday boy.” Dallas bumped the sub-zero stainless refrigerator closed with his hip. His dirty blond hair was tied back in a man-bun and he had on his infamous Cowboys apron.
